Up to funny business

Like many actors, Butler and Hope know all too well about working odd jobs to pay the bills. Although Don Angel's entrepreneurialspirit is exaggerated to the point of near madness, Butlerremembers similarly wild schemes from their post-student days.

"When Wayne was starting out as an actor, he taught himself graphicdesign," says Butler. "There's a little bit of Don Angel in theturning the dollar aspect. Wayne did a lot of catalogue work."

Says Hope: "The first couple of years out of university was aboutstraddling that world where you couldn't get much acting work. "Itwas a very earnest and poor phase of my life. I was pedallingfairly fast and I just gave myself a title. I just said, 'Yeah, I'ma graphic designer'. And of course I wasn't. I had a Mac withPagemaker. And so there's a lot of that in Don. He just says he'sall these people and says it with conviction and there's a lot ofdelight in that."

Where Hope pretended to be a graphic designer to earn a buck, Donreally believes his own lies.

"I love the complication of someone who believes in himselfabsolutely," says Hope. "Don's blind to corruption. He thinkseveryone's out to get everyone and it's who wins in the end ...He's not passive aggressive, he's overt. We're playing with thenotion of denial - in which degree can a person live with heavydenial? We think there's great comedy to be had out of not knowing. It's a facade. He's a true believer that he helps carry theeconomy. He really thinks he has made it big."

The theme of the disenfranchised modern male is one to which bothHope and Gyngell can relate.

"It's easy to identify yourself solely through work," says Hope."It's easy to say it's about putting food on the table but it'squite a shallow pursuit, really, defining oneself through one's joband I think that male dislocation as society's shifting to havingan emotional life as well, for a lot of men, is completely foreign. It's far easier to operate in a more simple mode: I'm growing abusiness, I've got a plan."

A flair for the theatrical, the tiki look and the surreal

But at the spring Macy's flower show at Union Square in SanFrancisco, the mannequins, by London manufacturer Adel Rootstein of Display Mannequins Limited, had faces that depicted realpeople. And since the faces were of Spaniards, think chiseledhauteur. Alongside Spanish-themed table settings, the dummiesappeared in toreador and flamenco dancer costumes.

An equal amount of stylish theater can be expected at Macy's 26thannual Passport fashion show next month, an AIDS fundraiser andhomage to the gifted, exuberant artist

Keith Haring, who died of the disease in 1990.

Macy's representative Puja Sabharwal says the reception area at Fort Mason Center's Festival Pavilionwill be festooned with reproductions of Haring's artwork. Thefestival's designers, directed by Lynne Winslow, will replicate a New York City subway station where Haringperformed a conceptual piece in which he painted himself "into awall."

A video of the performance will be projected in a party spacedesigned by Winslow. Through either coincidence or synchronicity,Tuesday night's pre-party at the Clift Hotel for the Passportevents Sept. 17 and 18 was at the hotel's Spanish Suite.General-admission tickets for Passport are $85. Other tickets forthe fundraiser, including Thursday's gala, range from $200 to$1,000. Details:

Drawing from experience

A graphic design class at Masconomet continues to help studentsgain real world experience while creating a relationship with localnon-profit organizations. Beginning this year, a sister programwill follow the same charitable process to show students howit’s done online.

The graphic design classes, taught by Stacy Mannheim, introducecomputer design to students and eventually offer them a glimpseinto the life of a professional graphic designer. Ever since theclass began, students have been working with local non-profits,such as the Tri-Town Council and the Boxford Athletic Association,to create posters and advertisements for events and programs.

It give the kids a great experience…and satisfies theneeds of a client,” Mannheim said.

Mannheim said the class is important because it shows students“what a real design project entails.”

And this year, the art department will be merging with instructorsin computer management to launch an all new Web design class, wherestudents will learn Internet programming, such as HTML, as well asskills and practices needed to create graphic designs for Webpages.

Both Mannheim and Art Department Chairman Terry Meinelt are hopingthey can offer the same type of professional experience provided inthe graphic design class, by working with local non-profit groupsthat are in need of Web design.

As the graphic design program has been with Masconomet for manyyears, so has the creation of partnerships with the community.

Low-energy, long-lasting LED lights becoming more maintream

The future is looking brighter forLEDs, the next generation of energy-efficientlighting

Prices are dropping for LEDs, orlight-emitting diodes, although they still cost much more thanincandescent or compact fluorescent bulbs. Rising energy pricesalso have helped raise public awareness of the miserly LEDs, whichare available in an increasing variety of lightingproducts.

This month lighting designer John Caleopened Green Light, a store that specializes in LEDs, in downtownOverland Park. In addition to building custom lighting pieces, Calecan retrofit any existing light fixture to use LEDs, starting at$30 plus parts. Green Light also sells LEDbulbs.

“LEDs are great for accentlighting, task lighting and indirect lighting,” saysCale, who has worked as a lighting designer at several localstores, including Western Chandelier and the Light Shop; They don’t have the heat issue ofincandescents and they don’t have the mercury issue ofcompact fluorescents, which makes it challenging to dispose ofCFLs.

White LED Bulb consumes 3.3 W.

Press Release

Release date: August 15, 2008

High-Power White LED MR16/GU10 Bulb Consumes 3.3 Watts

TORRANCE, CA - August 15, 2008 - LEDtronics?introduces an additionto its line of drop-in replacement MR16-styled/GU10-based LED bulbs: High-powered 3.3-Watt LED lamps. Two major advantagesdistinguish this new bulb over other GMR16 LED lamps. First, it isengineered to handle the variations in voltages that may accompany"noisy" or "dirty" AC (but not DC) power supplies, eliminatingpotential burnout from incoming voltage that is higher than thelamp's capacity. Second, the new 3.3-Watt MR16/GU10 bulb eliminatesthe need to stock a variety of LED MR16/GU10 bulbs to coordinatewith different voltages that power sources of 80-260 volts AC maypresent, simplifying procurement and inventory procedures.

High-powered 3.3-watt LED MR16/GU10 bulbs (Series Number GMR16-5W)have the following characteristics: Bi-pin bases just like standardincandescent MR16/GU10-based bulbs, and light outputs of 123 lumensusing only 3.3 watts with input voltage range of 80-260VAC. Thebulb features three High-Power LEDs and is offered in Warm White(3000 Kelvin) color temperature and in 20?spotlight beam angle. With factory approval, MR16/GU10 3.3W bulbs may be ordered in otherLED colors, voltages and beam angles. They carry a three-yearlimited warranty. Unlike halogen MR16 lamps that create potentiallydamaging heat and have caused fires when accidentally coming incontact with other objects, LED-sourced MR16/GU10 bulbs generateless heat while operating, and pose no threat to the objects theyare illuminating or to their surroundings.

OSRAM Achieves Quantum Leap in Brightness and Efficiency of White LEDs

Santa Clara, CA (July 21, 2008) - By improving all the technologiesinvolved in the manufacture of LEDs, OSRAM development engineershave achieved new records for the brightness and efficiency ofwhite LEDs in the laboratory. Under standard conditions with anoperating current of 350 mA, brightness peaked at a value of 155lm, and efficiency at 136 lm/W. In generating these results, researchers used white prototype LEDs with 1 mm-square chips. Thelight produced had a color temperature of 5000K, with colorcoordinates at 0.349/0.393 (cx/cy).

The key to OSRAM's success was the efficient interplay among allthe advances made in materials and technologies. A perfectlymatched system of optimized chip technology, a highly advanced andextremely efficient light converter, and a special high-performancepackage all combined to produce the world record performanceresults.

Potential applications for this high-performance LED technologyinclude general illumination, the automotive sector, and anyapplication that calls for large, high-power LEDs. Thesesemiconductor light sources are also suitable for high operatingcurrents. At 1.4 A, they can produce up to 500 lm of white light. This means that in the future the LEDs can also be used forprojection applications as blue and green chip versions.

Nanosphere-coated LEDs emit white light

Anthony Choi and his team at the University of Hong Kong hasdeveloped a smart coating of green and orange-red fluorescentnanospheres, which emits white light when applied to blue(470nm) LEDs. The dye-loaded polystyrene particlesself-assemble into an opal-like photonic structure that helps tochannel more light out of the solid-state devices and provides asmooth emission profile (Nanotechnology 19355203).

Typically, chip makers obtain white light by coating blue LEDs witha phosphor layer or by optically mixing red (R), green (G) and blue(B) emitters. The RGB approach is more efficient in terms of lightoutput, but combining the light in the right proportions to avoidcolour separation can present a challenge. Conversely, thephosphorous coating is much easier to use, but gives a reducedlight output due to the energy losses incurred during spectral downconversion.

Smuggling: price difference of $600 for urea responsible

Smuggling: price difference of $600 for urea responsible

By Ijaz Kakakhel

ISLAMABAD: The huge difference of urea prices above $600 per tonnein Pakistan and other regional countries are responsible formassive smuggling, hoarding and shortage of urea in the country.

In local market, the sale price of urea is below $200 per tonnewhile in regional countries including India, Iran, Afghanistan andCentral Asian Republics its value is $800 per tonne. The attractiveprice for urea in other countries helps in flourishing thesmuggling of the commodity. Taking advantage of illegal export ofthe commodity, the dealers start hoarding of the commodity furtheraggravating the situation.

Official spokesperson of the Ministry for Food, Agriculture andLivestock (MINFAL) and additional secretary told Daily Times thatthe government had not imported sufficient quantity of urea due tofinancial constraints. He admitted that some quantity of thecommodity was smuggled to neighbouring countries due to higherprices. He said local price of urea is $160 per tonne while inother countries its $800 per tonne. The over $640 per tonne pricedifference was responsible for some sort of smuggling of urea, besides urea shortage in the country.

He claimed that the government was taking appropriate steps forensuring smooth availability of urea in the country. The ministrywas in proper contact with Saudi Arabia for importing urea and inthis regard two officials of the ministry left for S Arabia. Theywould discuss with officials for releasing earlier import of ureafrom Saudi Arabia.

For smooth availability of locally produced urea, the official saidthat it would be distributed through DCO and other governmentidentified outlets for farmers. The government has decided todistribute 50 percent of urea through dealers and the remaining 50percent through government identified urea sales centres.

First test: Powabyke X-6, an electric bicycle that looks lik...

What transport is silent, faster than a Segway, cheaper than theTube and greener than an electric car? This new X-6 electricbicycle from Powabyke. A six-speed bike, its one of three newmodels promising to ditch electric cycling's dowdy image and getyou to work without becoming the Incredible Sweat. I've justreturned from a test ride, so here's the lowdown.

On many electric bikes, the battery is an ugly silver rectanglestrapped onto the frame. One thing I liked about the X-6 and itscompanion 24-speed (X-24) and low-step (X-6LS) siblings, however,is that the battery is ingeniously disguised as a water bottle (seephoto below). The size is a result of Powabyke switching from leadacid to lithium ion batteries, the type you'd usually find in alaptop.

The weakness of some electric bikes is they're excessively heavybecause of the motor, battery and circuitboard, but the X-6 isrelatively light at 22kg. While not as featherweight as one of themost popular electric bikes, Giant's 21kg Lafree pedelec, it's ahuge improvement on Powabyke's previous models, which weighed 39kg.

New A2B Electric Bike Has Ultra Slick Design

The moped is making a comeback, with crazy new prototypes and awealth of new products on city streets here and abroad.

The A2b, the newest member of the gang, hardly looks like the oldHonda clunkers of yore. In fact, it looks like an ordinary mountainbike, but beneath the A2B's sleek exterior lies a neat electricbicycle. Cleverly concealed within the aluminum frame are a lithiumion battery and motor, as well as all the associated wiring.

Built by Ultra Motors USA, it's not just the look of this ride thatmake it stand out. According to the company, the proprietary 500Wmotor in the bike provides more torque than other electric bikes(such as the E-Zip Trailz or the Panasonic Lithium Vivi)--though wehaven't tested that claim.

The A2B travels at speeds up to 20 miles per hour and up to 20miles on a single charge. Riders can use a secondary battery totravel up to 40 miles without re-charging.

New technology is never cheap, of course; the A2B will be availablein September for an estimated retail price of $2,500. But you'llnever buy gas again.

Electric bikes sell briskly in US as gas prices up

NEW YORK:

When Honora Wolfe moved with her husband to the outskirts of Boulder, Colorado, five years ago, she wanted an environmentallyfriendly way to commute to her job as a bookshop owner in the city.

Wolfe, 60, found her solution about a month ago: an electricbicycle. It gets her to work quickly, she said, is easy on herarthritis and is better for the environment than a car.

"I'm not out to win any races," she said. "I want to get a littlefresh air and exercise, and cut my carbon footprint, and spend lessmoney on gas. And where I live, I can ride my bike seven months outof the year."

The surging cost of gasoline and, for many, a desire for a greenercommute is turning some to less conventional forms oftransportation, like the electric bike. They function like aconventional two-wheeler, but with a battery-powered assist, andbike dealers, riders and experts say they are flying off the racksacross the U.S.

Overall sales figures are hard to pin down, but they point toincreased interest. Frank Jamerson, a former General Motors Corp.executive turned electric vehicle guru, estimates U.S. electricbike sales to top 170,000 this year, compared with 120,000 in 2007.The Gluskin-Townley Group, which does market research for theNational Bicycle Dealers Association, offers the more conservativeestimate of 10,000 units sold in the U.S. in 2007, up from 6,000 in2006.

Go From A2B on An Electric Bike, Praying The Battery Doesn't...

The few bicycle bits

listed on the specsaren't bad -- Shimano Alivio derailleur, Hayes disc brakes andfull suspension with an aluminum frame -- but you're clearly shelling out the big bucks for the proprietary motor and 36 voltlithium ion battery.

Ultra Motor says the A2B is better than other e-bikes because itwas "built from the tires up for superior performance."Those tires, by the way, are 3 inches wide. The battery providesjust 20 miles range -- you can add another battery to double that-- and,

according to one review, requires three to five hours to charge. Ultra Motor notes theU.S. Department of Transportation says nearly half of all tripspeople take each day are less than 3 miles, so it clearly thinksthe A2B has sufficient range for most people. If it doesn't, well, you can start pedaling. That same review said, "

Electric bikes: a shopper's guide

The most expensive batteries are made from lithium-ion and are asmuch as three times more powerful than regular batteries.

REQUIREMENTS:

No license or registration is required to ride an electric bicycle, but restrictions vary according to national guidelines. In somecountries the rider must wear a helmet.

In Europe, power-assisted bicycles must respect a speed limit of 25kilometers (15.5 miles) per hour with a power of 250 watts. You arealso required to pedal.

In the U.S., the speed restriction is 20 miles (32 kilometers) perhour and the power is limited to 750 watts.

In China, use of electric bikes is limited in some major cities. The southern city of Guangzhou has banned electric bicycles aspossible safety threats due to their high speed and on environmentgrounds because their batteries are considered a hazard if notdisposed of properly.

MODELS:

The electric bikes available vary from country to country. Here aresome of the choices available in France.

Build Your Own Electric Bicycle For $360

Many of us may be interested in greener forms of transportation, but we may not necessarily be interested in carpooling or public transit. Sure, it would be nice to have an extra $100,000 kickingaround for a Tesla, but the full electric thing just isn'tfinancially feasible for many of us. Until now... kind of.

AmpedBikes has put together a $360 kit that effectively convertsany bicycle (with 26-inch wheels) into a full electric form oftransportation. The juice comes from an electric battery and theinstallation will take a little work on your part, as you can seein the

provided video.

When I was in China years ago, I remember seeing an abundance ofbicycles equipped with lawn mower engines. I guess full electric isa little better for the environment.

Europe's latest craze: electric bikes

PARIS

My electric bike is no batmobile, but it makes me feel like asuperhero.

The motor is so quiet it's easy to forget it's there when I'mpedaling through the streets of Paris -- only I move much fasterthan a regular bike and I don't sweat. When I ride uphill, it feelslike someone is giving me a push.

The silver Chinese import that I bought for 300 euros ($470) mightnot look as flashy as Christian Bale's wheels in "The DarkKnight," but it is much cheaper to run and kinder to theenvironment too.

All of which helps explains why electric bikes are one of thehottest buys in Paris this summer -- and are filling the streets ofAmsterdam, Beijing and beyond.

"It's become a new means of transport," said OlivierBirault, owner of Paris store Velectris.

"In France we lost the culture of the bike after the war whenit was seen as old-fashioned or for poor people.

Accused Child Killer Wants To Represent Himself

In court Friday he said, "I've been trying to plead guilty for thepast five months. I've been prevented."

Baltimore Circuit Judge Gale E. Rasin responded: "I don't think anylawyer would do what you say you want the lawyer to do on the firsttrial date."

Rasin ordered a psychiatric evaluation to determine whetherCastillo was competent to stand trial. She also ordered thatpsychiatrists give an opinion whether he is competent to representhimself. Castillo said he would "welcome" such an evaluation.

Castillo has a history of mental problems and had been involved ina protracted custody dispute with his ex-wife. She said in a courtfiling that he had been diagnosed with mood disorder andnarcissistic personality disorder. And she said he had bathtub  threatened to kill their children so that she would be forced to live withoutthem.

Moody had previously entered a plea of not criminally responsible, but that plea was withdrawn in June at Castillo's request, and acompetency evaluation was never completed.

Castillo wore a striped polo shirt and green pants, his hands incuffs behind his back. He was lucid but agitated during thehearing, frequently interjecting comments while Rasin and hisattorneys were speaking. He asked that his competency evaluation beperformed in open court, which Rasin said was impossible.

Rasin told Castillo he would be hindered by his unfamiliarity withlegal procedures.

"Anyone who represents himself," she said, "is not on a levelplaying field. That person is at a serious disadvantage."

Prosecutors and defense attorneys have been barred from speaking toreporters about the case.

Investigators who took evidence from the couple's four-bedroom homesaid they found contradictions with Widmer's account of whathappened.

Widmer's lawyer, Charlie Rittgers, said the two were not havingtrouble and he doesn't understand why investigators believe thedeath wasn't accidental.

The couple had been married about six months and had no documentedhistory of domestic violence, Hutzel said. Rittgers said Widmer hasno criminal record.

Delay expected for trial in drownings of 3 children

"I don't think any lawyer would do what you said you wanted yourlawyer to do on your first trial date," Rasin said.

Rasin put the case on hold for 10 days so that court medical bathtub staffcould determine whether Castillo is competent to stand trial, andif so, whether he's competent to represent himself. Once thathappens, a new trial date will be set.

Rasin warned Castillo that if he were to represent himself,Maryland law would afford him "no special treatment."

You would "be at a serious disadvantage," she told him. "You wouldbe presumed to know the rules of procedure and the rules ofevidence."

Rasin pointed out that Castillo did not properly file his motionasking to represent himself with the court clerk's office and thathe sent her another request for changes in his mail and visitationrights, over which she had no control.

"You didn't even know how to file a motion properly in a case thatcouldn't be more serious," Rasin said.

In May, Assistant State's Attorney Julie A. Drake filed her intentto seek a penalty of life without parole.

Prosecutors have not filed an intention to seek the death penalty, but with this delay, a new window opens for them to do so.

Judge cuts bond in bathtub killing case

Widmer, 27, accused of aggravated murder in his wifes Aug. 11bathtub drowning in Hamilton Township, wasnt released in time toattend the Mass.

But mourners heard a eulogy that Widmer had written for his wife,Sarah, 24.

A priest read the eulogy aloud at St. Susanna Church in Mason asabout 400 people listened in a service closed to reporters.

In the eulogy, Widmer professed his love for his wife, said he waslucky she had chosen to be with him and expressed how much hemisses her, said Widmers lawyer, Charlie Rittgers.

Im happy that hes out, so at least he can start to grieve forhis wife, Rittgers said. He didnt have a copy of the eulogyavailable.

Prosecutors say an autopsy revealed bathtub signs of a violent struggle. They havent divulged the evidence.

Widmers supporters including Sarah Widmers relatives say theycannot imagine that Widmer could have harmed his wife. They say shehabitually fell asleep in the tub and in other places, and suspecther death was a freak accident, not a purposeful drowning.

Widmer was freed hours after Rittgers won a battle to get hisclients bond reduced from $1 million to $400,000, despiteprosecutors protests.

Supporters such as Brett Kostoff, 26, of Colerain Township, wereoverjoyed that Widmer was able to post bond.

Kostoff, who played baseball with Widmer at Colerain High School, said, If he is proven guilty, I have the worst read ever onpeople&There really was not a nicer guy. When there were fights andthings, he would go the other way to avoid confrontation. He didntlike it.

I like tomake half-inch slices and barbeque with olive oil and seasoning.Q: I bought a flower arrangement with black bamboo in it. The blacksticks still had their green leaves.
